Tony Worthy• The July market for new cars slowed as expected, with
registrations falling 13.2% (20,703) following 12 successive
monthly rises. The market remains up 15.1% over the first seven
months of 2010 compared to 2009. The Society of Motor Manufacturers
and Traders (SMMT) expects the 2010 new car market to reach 2.018m
units, 1.2% above 2009 market.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive,
said: “A drop in private registrations compared to the scrappage
scheme-fuelled months of 2009 was expected and has brought the
first market decline for 12 months..”

Commercial vehicle registrations
were 20,069 in July, down 4.4% to 236,629 for the rolling year.
Truck sales were also down 2,760 and 25.8% to 32,115 for the
rolling year. Van sales were 17,309 for the month; up 0.1% to
204,514 for the rolling year.

Everitt said: “The recovery in van
registrations continues, with truck figures also up. July was
another surprisingly good month for vans.

“While the forecast for 2011 is
more positive, the prospects for the rest of the year are gloomy
and we expect a near-record low for trucks. Fragile consumer and
business confidence make the outlook for the next 18 months
challenging.

The SMMT has also said that more
diesel cars were sold than petrol-driven cars last month. A survey
of new car registrations showed that in July diesel cars took a
record high 50.6% of the market share after rising 11.8%, while
petrol car registrations declined by 13.2%.

• Honda UK has introduced a package
to cover the cost of running a new car for the first three
years.

The offers are available on Jazz,
Civic and Insight models and can amount to savings on the OTR price
of as much as £1,425. The offers include three years’ servicing,
three years’ road tax, plus a range of finance options.

The deals reduce the price of a new
Jazz to £9,995, a Civic 1.4 Type S to £13,995 and an Insight to
£14,995, making it the lowest price hybrid on the market.

• Vauxhall has announced that its
cars are now covered by a lifetime warranty from the first day of
registration.

The warranty will apply to the
first owner of any Vauxhall registered after August 1 2010 and will
cover the car until it reaches 100,000 miles, no matter how many
years that takes. A further programme is planned which will enable
the second owner of the car to purchase the lifetime warranty.

• The average new car
CO2 emission figure was down 4.7% in first half of 2010
to 145.2g/km, compared with the same period in 2009.

Registrations of
alternatively-fuelled cars doubled during this period. There is
some concern that the rate of improvement may slow, but new
technologies are constantly emerging.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive,
said: “Continued vehicle manufacturer efforts to improve fuel
efficiency and cut emissions have further reduced average
CO2 output during a better than anticipated first half
of 2010.

“The remainder of the year is set to be challenging, especially
post the scrappage scheme. All manufacturers are committed to
offering ever more efficient products through the introduction of
increasingly efficient engines and alternative technologies.”
