Confidence is as “important” to boosting consumer demand in the used electric vehicle (EV) sector as pricing, according to the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP). 

AFP board director Ric Baird emphasised the need for EVs to be seen as “secure and sensible” purchases such as petrol or diesel vehicles.  

Last week, the AFP and other organisations signed a British Vehicle Leasing and Rental Association (BVRLA) letter urging more government support for used EV electrification. 

Baird said: “What is perhaps receiving less attention – although included in the letter – is the need to create more consumer confidence in used EVs, overcoming the real hurdles that exist, as well as the large number of distortions and half-truths in circulation.  

“There is an argument that generating a sense of everyday normality and absence of risk around EVs is as important as any financial considerations.” 

Key confidence factors include proving the long-term reliability of EV batteries and ensuring charging is economical and accessible.  

Misinformation about EV batteries, which includes their alleged tendency to self-combust or degrade rapidly, persists despite evidence showing their stability and longevity, Baird noted.  

He called for an industry-backed battery health check to reassure consumers, providing credible information for informed buying decisions. While the government is reportedly working on such a project, its swift implementation is crucial. 

Baird stressed the need for cost-effective, convenient charging solutions, particularly for residents in terraced houses or apartments. He noted that confidence is also essential for car dealers.

“There remain car dealers who will not touch a used EV, and that is a situation that cannot continue,” he said.

Understanding that buying and selling electric vehicles can be done with certainty by this year is vital.
