The Ford Fiesta was the UK’s best-selling used
car for a second consecutive year in 2011 in a market which shrank
0.43% from the 2010 figure, according to information services
provider Experian.
The Fiesta sales were up 1.5% to 290,254 units
in a used market of 6.77m cars, eclipsing
the new car market of 1.94m units and down 4.4% on the previous
year.
The top 10 best-selling used cars of 2011 were
the same 10 models as the previous year and improved their
dominance of the market with all models except the Ford Mondeo and
Vauxhall Vectra seeing an increase in sales.
The Mondeo remained in eighth place but the
Vectra dropped to tenth. Another Vauxhall, the Astra, was the only
other top 10 model to drop a position, falling from third to
fourth. The Ford Focus added 10.64% to sales, the biggest gain in
the top 10.

By GlobalDataOf those 6.77m used cars sold last year,
728,971 were sold on dealer finance in 2011 with the total
value of advances up by 4% and an average advance of £9,257,
according to the Finance & Leasing Association, compared to an
average advance for used and new vehicles from independent finance
providers of £6,416.
Experian found the top three best-selling used cars in 2011 were
the Fiesta, the Vauxhall Corsa and the Focus, while a
survey of finance brokers for used and new vehicles by Motor
Finance in February put the Astra top, followed
by the Focus, then the BMW 3 Series.
The mix of models and brands did overlap in
what Experian are calling a “clear North-South divide” in used car
purchases, with Vauxhall dominant in the North and Ford in the
South, and the BMW 3 Series being the most-bought used car in
Greater London.
