New car sales grew for the 37th consecutive month, reaching 492,774 registrations in March, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
New car registrations increased by 6% compared to March 2014 and it was the highest number since the twice-yearly number plate changes were introduced in 1999.
According to the SMMT, this record result was triggered by new products and attractive finance packages underpinned by low interest rate. The fleet sector witnessed the highest growth, with an 11.6% year-on-year increase.
Ford remained the best-selling brand in the UK market with 63,446 cars sold in March, followed by Vauxhall (48,689) and Volkswagen (38,685). Nissan claimed fourth place after seeing its sales increasing by 21.5% year-on-year to 31,026 units, ahead of Audi (29,153).
Ford Fiesta was the best-selling vehicle in the month, with 27,034 cars registered, followed by Vauxhall Corsa (19,391) and Ford Focus (15,442).
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "The best month this century for new car registrations is a welcome boost for the UK’s thriving automotive sector. The challenge for a new government and industry will be to maintain this momentum and to strengthen Britain’s manufacturing capabilities through continued investment, innovation and policies which maintain our global competitiveness. Whatever the general election result, the new government must keep up the commitment to the sector which is delivering at home and abroad."
