Vehicle auction house Manheim has revealed plans to relocate its operation at Leeds Commercials to its 10-acre Shepshed auction site.
Manheim said the proposed move was in response to significant growth in the company’s commercial vehicle auction business. "Lack of space at the company’s Leeds Commercials site means it is unable to extends the centre’s footprint to meet increasing volumes," it said.
The company credited this growth with a rise in online shopping from British consumers, pointing out that home delivery by department stores has risen by 53% since 2011.
The Shepshed centre was closed in 2012 as part of a multi-million pound investment in a new auction centre in Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire. Before that, it had been in operation since the 1970s.
Although a specific number was not provided, Manheim said a "seven figure" sum would be spent recommissioning the premises if the plan went ahead.
Tim Hudson, managing director for Manheim Remarketing, said: "Our proposal to recommence vehicle auctions at Shepshed would see the creation of a unique strategic commercial vehicle auction centre of excellence. We are also committed to ensuring that it plays a productive role in the community."
