Values for used diesel cars have been steady in the July-September period on a year-on-year basis, according to cap hpi’s Black Book guide.

Petrol vehicles, meanwhile, saw their values rise by over 1% on average. Electric cars registered the most noticeable drops, although only in the decimal digits.

Average values for the five categories considered – diesel, diesel hybrid, electric, petrol and petrol hybrid – have remained stable.

James Dower, Black Book senior editor, said: “Our insight is painting a more positive image than some reports would have you believe. September’s used sales volumes clearly show that motorists favoured diesel over petrol fuel type vehicles.

“For the good of the automotive sector, it’s time for composure, to bring an end to the scaremongering and look at the actual facts. Virtually across the board diesels have posted a stronger than average performance on values over the past three months combined with the fact that the overall diesel share of the sales market is higher this year than it was last year, by almost 2% in April and Sept.”
