The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) has released findings from its latest Consumer Attitude Survey (CAS), indicating that franchised dealers are the preferred retailer for vehicle purchases in the UK.
The survey, conducted by JudgeService between 31 May and 5 June 2024, involved 1,500 motorists and covered topics from electric vehicles (EVs) to dealership satisfaction.
Franchised dealers emerged as the most popular choice among respondents, with 46% purchasing their current vehicle from these outlets.
This figure is more than double the 22% who opted for independent dealers, the second most common choice.
The survey also revealed that satisfaction levels with franchised dealers are high, with 92% of participants having either ‘very satisfied’ or ‘fairly satisfied’ experiences.
Furthermore, the survey identified cost as the primary obstacle to EV adoption, with 55% of motorists considering EVs ‘too expensive’.

By GlobalDataThe NFDA’s Electric Vehicle Approved (EVA) scheme is found to be integral in influencing consumer decisions, with nearly 25% stating it would be a significant factor in choosing a main dealer for their EV purchase.
NFDA CEO Sue Robinson said: “It is positive to see that overall satisfaction with franchised dealers remains high and that many consumers rely on the trusted expertise and knowledge of dealerships when purchasing their vehicles.
“With the Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate having come into law earlier this year, it is concerning that cost remains the primary barrier to electric vehicle adoption.
“NFDA’s 2024 CAS has given a unique perspective into consumer behaviour and their interactions with dealerships and competitors.”
The survey also shed light on purchasing trends across different age groups. Less than 40% of respondents aged between 17 and 45 years reported buying from a franchised dealer.
In the 56-65 and 66-75 age brackets, 50%-60% purchased from franchised dealers, and the figure rose to 63% among those aged 76 and above.
JudgeService founder and managing director Neil Addley said: “46% of respondents had bought from a franchised dealer, 22% from an independent, 9% from a car supermarket, 8% privately, 5% from friends or family, and 5% from an online retailer.
“The survey was executed in line with the Market Research Society Code of Conduct by Your Poll, part of JudgeService.”
