The Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA) has urged the new Labour government to prioritise electrification and investment in the UK motor industry.
Philip Nothard, chair of the VRA, emphasised that although the administration may not have substantial funds available, it should focus spending on areas likely to yield the best results.
“The Labour message throughout their campaign and for the past 2-3 years has centred on investment and growth. We believe that two key areas that would respond well to funding are electrification and motor manufacturing,” Nothard stated.
Nothard called for measures to support the transition to electrification, including accelerating the creation of charging infrastructure, particularly on urban streets, and providing direct assistance to those looking to purchase used EVs. He noted that the used EV market is not yet functioning normally, and improving this market is crucial for the government’s zero-emissions strategy.
“We also need more investment for manufacturers switching to EVs over this decade. The competition in the market is intense, and car and van makers in the UK will need support to compete successfully,” he added.
Nothard highlighted the importance of addressing skills shortages in the remarketing sector and the wider industry. “Like other sectors, we are facing skills shortages. We need more support to attract and train the people necessary for the future. This issue will impact the industry’s development and requires attention.”
