Tim Cook, chief executive officer of tech giant Apple, has admitted to Bloomberg Television that Apple is working on an autonomous system.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Cook said: “There is a major disruption looming there. Not only for self-driving cars, but also the electrification piece.”
He added: “Plus you’ve got ride sharing on top of this. So you’ve got three vectors of change happening generally in the same time frame.”
As a result, the company was looking at developing an autonomous system – which Cook noted self-driving cars was but one application.
The company has been secretive about its automotive plans until now, which has led to a number of rumours about what it has been working on. For example the Wall Street Journal reported in late 2016 it planned to have an electric car ready to ship in 2019, shortly after it was reported that it was in talks to buy McLaren.
Now, however, Cook has admitted the company is looking into what he described as ‘the mother of all AI projects,’ and ‘one of the most AI projects to work on.’
