Auto Trader, the UK’s largest automotive platform, has updated its initiative addressing misinformation about electric vehicles (EVs), in collaboration with ChargeUK and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The latest edition of ‘The Facts’ provides new data on EV affordability, charging infrastructure, and consumer sentiment.

Key updates include:

  • The UK now has 75,675 public charge points, including 15,109 ultra-rapid chargers, up from 14,711.
  • The price gap between new EVs and petrol cars has narrowed from 33% last year to 23% in March.
  • More used EVs are becoming affordable, with 38% now priced under £20,000, up from 33% in November.
  • The number of new EV models available for under £30,000 has risen to 29, compared to 21 last year.
  • Potential annual fuel cost savings for EV drivers have increased to £790 from £750, reflecting higher petrol and diesel prices.

The initiative has gained further backing from Zapmap, a charge point tracking company, and the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which will promote the resource to consumers and retailers. The Department for Transport has also endorsed the project.

The updated data seeks to dispel common misconceptions, such as concerns over EV fire risks, charging infrastructure availability, and real-world driving range.

Auto Trader’s latest research also indicates growing market confidence, with more retailers stocking used EVs. Franchise retailers continue to dominate, with 79% (3,400) now offering at least one used EV — a 7% year-on-year increase. Independent retailers have been slower to adopt, with just 17% (1,900) stocking EVs, a modest 2% rise from the previous year. Despite lingering consumer hesitation, 83% of current EV owners say they would buy electric again.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said the transition to EVs is gaining momentum, stating, “With decreasing costs, improved range, and a charge point network growing at lightning speed, there’s never been a better time to switch to electric.” She added that the government is investing over £2.3 billion to support the EV transition, create jobs, and strengthen the UK’s clean energy sector.

Jade Edwards, Head of Insights at Zapmap, welcomed the initiative’s efforts to build consumer confidence in EV charging, saying, “Through our app, we give confidence to current EV drivers when they are out and about, while our unrivalled charging data and insights give the next wave of EV drivers the confidence to make the switch.”

NFDA Chief Executive Sue Robinson also expressed support, stating, “As the consumer-facing end of the industry, NFDA members have the professional knowledge and understanding of UK electric vehicle sales. They provide comprehensive guidance on EV purchases and expert after-sales support.”

Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader, highlighted the progress in affordability, noting, “One highlight of the recent update is the growth of affordable EVs – we need to make sure there’s an EV for everyone, and two in five used electric cars now under £20,000 is a good sign.”
