Passenger car registrations in the EU reached 744,799 in August, up 11.2% year-on-year, according to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
All major markets posted growth compared to August 2014. Registrations in Spain, Italy and France witnessed double digit growth of 23.3%, 10.6% and 10% respectively. UK new passenger car registrations rose by 9.6% year-on-year, while in Germany they were up by 6.2%.
Year-to-date new passenger car registrations increased by 8.6% compared to the same period in 2014, to exceed 9m units (9,056,539). All major market posted growth, contributing to the overall upturn of the EU market over the period.
Manufacturer performance
Volkswagen remained the most popular brand in the EU, as it sold 1,109,680 cars in the first eight months of 2015, 7% more than the same period in the previous year.
Ford remained the second largest brand over the period, with 660,084 vehicles sold.

By GlobalDataRenault overtook Opel/Vauxhall in the period from January to August 2015. The former sold 626,517 vehicles while the latter sold 615,400 vehicles. In comparison, Renault sold 569,746 vehicles in the same period in 2014, while Opel/Vauxhall sold 579,269.
In the first eight months of the year Peugeot and Audi sold 550,870 and 496,259 vehicles respectively.
The brands which witnessed the highest rates of growth in car sales were Jeep (176.2%), Smart (67%) and Mitsubishi (46.3%).
The VW Group – which includes Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche – was the manufacturer group that sold the most cars between January and August. 2,273,771 cars from this group were sold in the first eight months of the year, marking a 7% year-on-year increase.
