Vauxhall vehicles, as well as prestige models from BMW and
Mercedes, feature predominantly among the top-10 most financed cars
in the non-prime market, according to specialist lender
Moneybarn.
The most popular car chosen by Moneybarn customers over the
year-to-date was the Vauxhall Astra, with the BMW 3 Series tied in
second place with the Ford Focus, in a list that differs
significantly from the wider market.
Moneybarn’s top-10 list is:
1 Vauxhall Astra
2= BMW 3 Series
2= Ford Focus

Moneybarn managing director Peter Minter said: “We’re certainly
seeing our customers being more pragmatic about their car
purchasing – there’s less and less exotica on our books than there
was pre-credit crunch and more and more family cars, but we still
have applications for some pretty exciting cars.
“The fact that Vauxhall features so prominently on our list
reflects the trend for cars that are practical, affordable and with
reasonable running costs and we fully expect this to continue into
the future.”
Moneybarn also reports a number of prestige and performance cars
outside its top-10, with high numbers of BMW M3, M5 and X5s,
Porsche Boxster and Cayennes, Mercedes SLK and MLs, Bentley
Continentals, Ferrari 360s and Aston Martins.
The company’s marketing manager Adrian Leaman
said: “Some of the more exotic cars we finance are owned by
individuals with high incomes, but their income tends to be
irregular. These customers are, for instance, models, or minor
celebrities or reality TV stars. Also, while they command big fees,
some of them have rock’n’roll lifestyles, and would be regarded as
unsuitable customers by the high street banks and other
lenders.”
In contrast, auto trade website Auto Trader
reports that the most viewed car on its new car site is the Ford
Fiesta with Vauxhall’s Astra in second place – results that are
broadly in line with the 2010 UK sales figures, when the most
popular UK new cars were:
1 Ford Fiesta
2 Vauxhall Astra
3 Ford Focus
4 Vauxhall Corsa
5 Volkswagen Golf
6 Volkswagen Polo
7 Peugeot 207
8 BMW 3 Series
9 Mini
10 Nissan Qashqai
