They may be the smallest ‘vans’ in the
marketplace and many have no greater capacity than the average
estate car, yet car-sized vans are hugely desirable and sought
after.
Not every used-van buyer needs
huge carrying capacity or wants a long-wheel-base. Remember, most
used vans will spend their second working life in a residential
setting – car-sized vans don’t fill up the drive or block the light
from the neighbour’s living room.
In fact the smallest of the lot
– the hatchbacks – are generally the most in demand. There are few
examples in the market and their scarcity means clean straight
examples can make strong money at auction.
Their size means they tend to
have light use and are often in better condition at any given
mileage than their bigger brethren. The converse of this is
hard-worked examples are often passed over. While many LCVs will
stay in service for five years (or even longer), consider changing
commercial hatchbacks in line with the car fleet at around
three-and-a-half years.
Condition and presentation are
always important, so don’t take them straight out of service and
into the remarketing chain. Many non-trade buyers will be put off
if the vehicle looks tatty or dirty, whereas the trade buyer will
simply polish a profit into it and sell it on.
Practical small load carriers
are favoured by everyone from florists to electricians as a second
user. The trade knows this, rates these vans highly and bids
accordingly. Buyers don’t expect a high specification and are quite
happy with a white finish, but tend to avoid non-factory finishes,
particularly in garish colours.

By GlobalDataThe Peugeot 206 1.4 HDi always
attracts the buyers in droves, with three-year-old examples at
sensible mileage (around 55,000 – 60,000) averaging around £2,400
at BCA. Higher mileage older examples need to be in great condition
but will still make very sensible values – a six-year old, 71,000
mile model recently made £1,500 at BCA, which is CAP Clean.
The Vauxhall Corsa Van is
another desirable beast and three-year-old examples sell for over
£1,700 at 80,000 miles. Astravan always finds a ready audience,
with the Sportive models generally being the pick of the bunch –
clean, straight, well-presented examples routinely make top guide
values. The 1.7 CDTi Club models are also much in demand, with
low-mileage 08-registered examples selling for around £7,000. Even
high-mileage Astravans will sell strongly if they are in good
condition.
