The prospect of a scrappage scheme, which would
give consumers a financial incentive to replace older cars with a
new, green model, is gaining support on a national and European
level.
Sue Robinson, director of the RMIF’s National
Franchised Dealers Association, has called for the government to
introduce a self-financing scrappage scheme, to stimulate car
sales.
Scrappage policies have been successfully
adopted by a number of European countries in the last few years,
including Ireland, France, Germany, and Spain, and we believe that
adopting the policy could help move the economy in the right
direction,” Robinson stated. The matter was raised at an
extraordinary meeting of EU industry ministers in Brussels on
January 16.
