Toyota and EDF Energy have
signed a three-year deal to lease prototype electric cars to
companies in London.
The Japanese manufacturer said the
initiative could provide the government with insights into car
recharging and infrastructure issues.
It will lease 20 Prius Plug-in Hybrid
Vehicles to five London companies, while EDF is to set up car
battery charging points at workplaces, on the street and
elsewhere.
The prototype car can reportedly run
for 12.5 miles and drive at 62 mph using only its electric motor,
and for trips up to about 15 miles, it is said to use 60% less
fuel.
It is designed to complete most urban
trips without consuming any fuel or creating any emissions, and
automatically switches to its 1.8 litre petrol engine if the
battery runs out in the middle of a journey.
