In contrast to the UK, where car registrations during both March
and the first quarter increased year-on-year, sales of new cars in
the EU slid downwards for the sixth consecutive month in March,
with sales declining by 7% compared to March 2011.

The total of 1,453,407 passenger car sales across the EU was the
lowest March registration figure since 1998.

The figures were diverse, with the Italian (-26.7%), French
(-23.2%) and Spanish (-4.5%) markets contracting, while the UK
(+1.8%) and Germany (+3.4%) performed better than they did in March
2011.

With a total of 3,312,657 registrations in the first quarter,
the EU new car market shrank by 7.7%, compared to Q1 2011. During
the quarter, the German (+1.3%) and British (+0.9%) markets
expanded slightly, while Spanish sales dropped by 1.9%, and Italy
(-21.0%) and France (-21.6%) experienced much sharper
downturns.
