Vehicle checking service HPI has helped
Greater Manchester Police to halt the resale of stolen cars with
cloned identities.
Police recovered £570,000 worth of stolen
vehicles from an organised criminal ring, two of whom have been
arrested, that would steal cars and give them the ‘cloned’
identities of similar vehicles already in use. Those buying a
cloned car risk losing both the vehicle and their money.
The gang used falsified number plates,
registration numbers, MOT certificates, receipts and vehicle check
documents, as well as stolen V5 and road tax documents.
HPI were credited with “a key role” in helping
police with the investigation and took the opportunity to remind
customers and traders to
use the HPI Check, which may protect against methods such as
those used by the gang, on any vehicle considered for purchase. An
HPI Guarantee also provides up to £30,000 financial
reimbursement on a vehicle should it prove to be stolen,
written-off or on outstanding finance.
Full statistics from the FLA Vehicle Recovery Scheme run in
conjunction with HPI Crushwatch are published
each month in
Motor Finance
magazine.
