New car registrations since 1 March have surpassed registrations in all of the previous nine six-month periods, despite the number 13 license plate, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Between March and July, inclusive, 1,115,459 new vehicles were registered, beating registrations of all plates issued since September 2008, with registrations for August yet to be counted.

New car registrations will come with the number 63 plate as of September, of which the SMMT expects 390,000 sales worth £6bn in the first 30 days.
Typically, September records the second-highest number of new vehicle registrations, after March.
Last year, the SMMT recorded 359,612 new car registrations, up 8.16% year-on-year. At the time, a Motor Finance survey found the majority of car retailers believed fears that public superstition would suppress sales of the 13 registration plate in March to be nonsense.
