Cap hpi has revamped its National Mileage Register (NMR) investigation service, streamlining the process to provide faster and more efficient support for vehicle dealers.
Mileage register
The NMR investigation, activated when an HPI Check flags potential mileage discrepancies, uses data from over 20 industry sources to verify a vehicle’s mileage history. Recent investments in technology and data infrastructure mean certificates for cases without discrepancies are now delivered instantly. Where issues are detected, dealers are notified immediately that an investigation is underway.
Cap hpi has also bolstered its investigative team, expanding it to 15 operatives to handle cases more effectively.
John Dennis, UK sales director at cap hpi, said: “We’ve conducted a comprehensive review of our NMR investigation service. The re-engineered process is not only faster and more reliable but also offers clearer data to help dealers manage risk more effectively. This efficiency saves both time and money while ensuring thorough investigations.”
The updated service references over 500 million records from multiple sources, including the DVLA, V5 documents, insurance claims data and vehicle leasing companies.
The HPI Check, developed in partnership with Trading Standards, is designed to assist dealers in complying with laws aimed at preventing the sale of clocked vehicles. By comparing the vehicle’s current mileage against the NMR database, the service confirms whether the recorded mileage reflects the true distance travelled.

By GlobalDataTrading Standards has endorsed the service, confirming its utility in providing a viable defence for dealers should mileage-related issues arise, provided it is used alongside other due diligence measures. Recommendations include obtaining a signed mileage declaration from the vehicle owner, inspecting the vehicle to ensure its condition aligns with the recorded mileage, and reviewing its MOT and service history.
John Dennis emphasised the importance of the updated service in tackling mileage fraud, stating: “The NMR Check and Investigation Service protect both dealers and car buyers from the growing issue of mileage manipulation. By drawing from diverse and extensive data sources, we deliver a robust solution to ensure trust and compliance in vehicle transactions.”
