Ampere, Renault Group’s dedicated electric vehicle (EV) and software subsidiary, has officially inaugurated a new software research and development centre within the Sophia Antipolis technology park, near Nice, France.

The facility marks a significant step in Ampere’s mission to accelerate EV adoption across Europe, the company said in a press release.

The new building, tailored to the needs of Ampere’s software teams, combines office and laboratory spaces designed to support agile collaboration. With a focus on developing future centralised architectures for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), the centre is home to nearly 200 engineers with key expertise in EV and software technology.

Since its establishment as an independent business on 1 November 2023, Ampere has been focused on driving innovation and competitiveness in the electric vehicle sector. The Sophia Antipolis Centre will serve as a key hub for this strategy, reinforcing Ampere’s position at the forefront of Europe’s EV industry.

Sophia Antipolis, a European tech hub, spans 2,400 hectares and hosts over 2,500 companies, employing more than 38,000 people. It is renowned for fostering innovation in fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and autonomous vehicles, with an emphasis on sustainability and quality of life.

Despite the recent decision to delay Ampere’s planned initial public offering (IPO) due to unfavourable market conditions, the opening of Ampere’s new centre underscores Renault Group’s ongoing commitment to the growth of its EV and software operations, the company said in the press release
