Concept: Japanese company Sony has unveiled an electric car prototype named Vision-S 02 electric SUV concept to enter the electric vehicles (EV) market. The Sony Vision-S 02 is a seven-seater SUV that has the same EV/cloud architecture as the Vision-S 01 prototype. This SUV would be driven by an all-electric drive unit with two motors each capable of delivering 268 horsepower.

Nature of Disruption: Sensors deployed 360 degrees surrounding the vehicle include high-sensitivity, high-resolution, wide dynamic range CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensors and LiDAR sensors that can precisely perceive three-dimensional space in the Vision-S 02 new prototype vehicle. Moreover, the system works in coordination with the vehicle’s sound system and HMI (human-machine interface) system to give natural driver interaction that can help the driver accurately determine the status of the surrounding environment. Sony’s mobility interface solution would feature intuitive gestures and voice commands to make the automobile interface more user-friendly. Users can sync vehicle settings, key locks, and user settings by connecting the vehicle to the cloud via a mobile connection, such as 5G, which offers low latency, high capacity, and fast speed. Also, as updates are mirrored in the vehicle via over-the-air (OTA), security and evolving service functionalities and value-added services can be provided constantly. An immersive music experience is provided by the seat speakers, which generate a three-dimensional sound field, and the streaming service is compatible with 360 Reality Audio. BRAVIA CORE, a digital video service that allows shared or individual video playback on the front panoramic screen and individual rear-seat displays, is also included with Vision-S.

Outlook: To improve safety in line with autonomy, Sony Vision-S 02 incorporates high-sensitivity, high-resolution, wide-dynamic-range sensors all around. The vehicle would also come with a new feature that allows users to modify the display style as well as the vehicle’s acceleration and deceleration sounds. Sony is now testing this technology on European roads and aims to release Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in the future. In 2022, Sony plans to establish an operating company, Sony Mobility Inc, through which the company intends to accelerate and make new proposals that further evolve the mobility experience.
