New car registrations in April were up by 14.78% to 163,357 units, the highest level of year-on-year growth for 14 months, according to latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Registrations for the year to the end of April totalled 768,555 units, a year-on-year rise of 8.88%.
As noted consistently last year, private registrations were at the forefront of the rise and, at 81,753 registrations, were 32.25% above the level recorded in April 2012.
Mike Baunton, interim chief executive of the SMMT, highlighted "attractive finance deals" alongside consumer confidence and regular purchase cycles as reasons for the UK not suffering from the same car retail depression as the rest of Europe.
As such, the SMMT has revised upward its forecast for 2013 total new registrations to 2.106 million units, from the January prediction of 2.057 million units, which would exceed the 2012 total of 2,044,609 new car registrations.
