Just 31% of motorists believe the Government should increase the national speed limit from 70mph to 80mph, according to a survey of 1,172 consumers by online car finance broker Car Loan 4U.
Other results from the survey include:
- 46% of those surveyed admitted breaking the current national speed limit
- 30% wanted all EU countries to have the same speed limit
- 25% believe the current national speed limit is too slow
- 19% admitted having received points, a fine or a ban for speeding (but 51% knew somebody who had)
- 13% had been stopped by the police for speeding
- 7% said even if the speed limit was increased, they would probably still go faster
- 7% said there should be no upper speed limit on UK motorways
- 3% had been involved in an accident due to speeding
Ryan Dignan, Car Loan 4U co-director, said: "The discussion on increasing our national speed limit has been a hot topic for a while now.
"It seems to be up in the air if and when the Government will look to introduce an 80mph speed limit, but these statistics make for interesting reading and debate."
