Vehicle auction company British Car Auctions (BCA) says 4×4 values rose sharply by 16% in October, as the first signs of winter appeared.
Average 4×4 values rose to more than £13,000 last month, up £1,838 compared to September, and well ahead of spring and summer values.
BCA’s Tim Naylor said now would be a good time to buy a 4×4 as prices may rise further if the more severe weather predicted takes hold.
"There is a well charted trend between falling temperatures and rising values for 4x4s," he said "and we would expect to see that continue in the next few months.
"When it comes to choosing a 4×4, buyers should go for the best specification they can afford, as this will help the vehicle retain its value in the years ahead."
The rise in popularity of 4x4s in November was also recorded by BCA in 2010 and by both the Vehicle Remarketing Association and CAP in 2011.
